The footsteps and Breathing behind me

Almost 6 years ago when I was in Year 11, I studied at a high school in Melbourne, Australia. You could say I was the nerd of my class, wanting the just cease on any learning opportunities that arise. Since grade 8, I’ve attended activities such as singing competition, school chess, volunteer service at my local library and nursing home, you name it I would do it. However, everything changed when I went on a leadership camp. There was 11 people who attended this leadership camp, who none of which I was friends with even when I’ve spent 2 years with them. It was an early morning when we reached this resort. The first thing we had to do is choose our rooms. In each room there were 2 single beds, a drawer in between and a small cupboard where you only really could hand 10 shirts. All the furniture took up most of the room, making it quite hard to even sleep on the floor. Not surprisingly I was the odd one out so had to sleep alone. However, I was not scared sleeping alone as most of my life my teenage life with divorced parents, I lived with my dad who always wasn’t home till the early morning.
After a long day of activities we were all dead tiered. I remember it was around 9:40pm when we were dismissed and free to go to our rooms or do what we liked. Since I had nothing better to do, I decided to have a shower. When I was about to enter my room I felt a cold chill just brushing behind my neck. With one hand on the knob, I turned my head and unknowingly looked right towards the toilet around 5 metres from my room. The corridor was dim, with one light near the toilet seemingly requires replacement blinking like it were disco lights. From the partial light, I saw a grey object which looked like a person wearing a hat, and had similar height to me (I’m 178cm). Within the next blinking cycle the object disappeared.

At that moment I thought I was dreaming. I then entered my room without closing my door. I sat on the bed to the farthest of the door, with my luggage on my lap finding the clothes I need to change after my shower. I had a feeling someone was standing outside my door staring at me. With the corner of my eye, I had a quick glance but saw nothing. I felt uncomfortable from that point on and felt a chill which surrounded what before was a warm room.
I started feeling afraid of showering or even to move as the presence of this thing became every so strong. To my delight, I heard the others coming back and to their rooms. I stood outside and pretended to play with my mobile phone, but my intentions were to wait and see if anyone of them were going to shower as well. While waiting I noticed the light close to the toilets wasn’t blinking anymore, and the corridor lights were much brighter than they were.
Finally, 2 of them were going to shower, and I followed along. While entering the toilet it was huge. The toilet was like a swimming pool bathroom where there were at least 14 shower compartments to the right with toilets on the other.

After showering, I entered my room and closed the door. I kept all the lights in my room on including the bed side lamp. The shower made me awake so I decided to have a read of my novel. Time flew by ever so quickly, with a look at my mobile it was past 12am. I could still hear the others outside chatting which gave me assurance to sleep. At that point I really forgot what I saw early and fell asleep. In the middle of the night I was woken up by the coldness which yet again took over my room. I went across to the next bed to grab the blanket.

Having drank too much water I had to go to the toilet. As I was still in sleeping mode I tried to walk towards the toilet with my eyes closed. I quickly entered the closest cubical to pee. As I was peeing, I heard footsteps behind me walking. The footsteps were quite loud like a person wearing wooden soles. The footstep suddenly stopped right to the cubical next to me. As I was half awake I was sort of unconscious and thought it was my classmates. During that second, so many thoughts came to my mind since the time I woke up. When I woke up my lights were all switched off? But I didn’t switch it off. Why were the footsteps like someone wearing wooden soles? As I remembered no one wore wooden soles to camp. Only then the fear started to dominate me. I didn’t know what to do and was stiff frozen. The silence became evident and it was freaking me out. Suddenly I heard a tapping sound on the wooden cubical board right next to my ear. From then on all I could hear was my heart beating so quickly like I ran one hours non-stop.

In my mind, I thought of two options, pretend to faint or run to back to my room. As I was still determining which option I would take I heard to footsteps walking from the side to the back of me. I felt the presence so close that I could hear its puffing breathe. I wanted to move but couldn’t. I didn’t even dare to breathe. It felt like a life time when I was in control of my body again. I thought to myself I was going to turn and charge that thing down. Firstly, I tried to see if I was in control of my body by moving a finger. That worked. With one giant intake of oxygen I turned with my arms moving first. During my circular motion, I saw nothing and ran so quickly that as if I was chased by a car wanting to run me over.

As I was in my room I quickly turn on my lights and spoke loudly, ‘What are you! Don’t bother me! I’m just going to stay here till the morning! Please don’t scare me!’  I looked at my mobile and saw it was close to 5am. I gazed so hard as if I was staring the door down, while using all my energy trying to keep my eyes open to show that I wasn’t afraid of it. Without knowing, I fell asleep till the morning when my teacher knocked to wake me up. As the sunlight dispersed through blinds I could see my room clearly. Again, the lights were switched off when I kept it on before I slept! However, what terrified me the most was seeing large muddy footprints that started from the door towards my bed.
