The Piano in the old Wooden House

March 4, 2010 Ghost Story No Comments

My name is Daniel and I’m 25.  I currently live in Perth, Australia but I use to lived in a small country town in Northern Victoria, with a population of 1,200 people called Chiltern until I was 18.

My story started almost 9 years ago, when it was one of those late we have every Christmas period where we had to do a total stock take of the supermarket.  My boss left early and so did my other work mate who was suppose to help me out, but apparently he was sick so his parents picked him up at around 10:30pm. I thought we would be finished by 11:00pm, where then I could go pick up my dog, Kat from a family friend near by.  However, working myself delayed progress severely and it took me till 11:45pm to close the shop.  Usually my parents would drive and pick me up from work but they were off to Queensland enjoying a lovely Christmas holiday while I had to be stuck alone, but I guess the double pay made me feel a little better.

After closing the store, I walked about 3 minutes to my family friend to pick up Kat.   I’ve never walked home this late before but luckily I had Kat with me.  I was a bit uneasy with the clock ticking nearly to 12am but I didn’t feel too scared as there was a clear moon in the sky and Kat was happily strolling along with me.

What I did feel scared was about passing the old wooden house in the lane where my house was. People say strange things about that house, I remember stories of murder and ghosts but I never really believed them.  At history class, it was said the house was built in the 1870’s and was the residence of wealthy gold diggers from the Netherlands.  Chiltern was one of the famous gold towns in the golden rush era so there are lots of these houses around with no one living in them.  Most of the family who own those houses have moved to the city and I think gave up on selling, as there aren’t many buyers in a 1,200 people town.  The house was very old and was suppose to be a tourist site so refurbishments had taken place, but the local council stopped as they lacked funds to continue so the conditions weren’t that great but it sure look good for a 120+ year house.  Nevertheless, being the coward I am, I always walk the opposite path when passing the History house.

As we approached, I saw the moon slide behind the cloud enveloping my neighborhood with darkness. I shivered and put my jacket closer to me as the air started to get colder. Pretty soon, we were up against the old wooden house. I walked to the opposite lane and avoided looking at the run-down scary domicile as I bolted past it quickly. I had taken two or four strides when I heard Kat bark. I turned to see she was gone, and to my immense horror my eyes sought her out in the front path of the History house, playfully running around in circles. I hastily beckoned Kat to come to me but she just wouldn’t budge from the place, one of the tiring games I have to put up with. I had no choice but to cross the road to go and get her.

As I stood outside the History house’s broken gate, I looked up to the house. Chills ran down my spine and fear struck my heart as I squeezed through the gate and stepped inside the front path. I furiously ran after Kat who barked even louder as if it were a game and I had to catch her in order to win. Stupid dog didn’t realize that it had led us into a realm of supposed haunting entities and I was getting scared by the minute as the old house creaked in the chilly wind and the house seemed to glare down at me with its broken windows and walls. Finally, after running around in frantic circles, Kat got tired of the game and willingly jumped into my arms.

As I turned to leave, I made out a faint music tune coming from inside the house. Curiosity arose, as the music was very soothing yet haunting in its harmony and sounded like it was being played from a music box. Curiosity won over fear and I daringly decided to take a peek inside the window where the music seemed to drift outside. I wiped away ages old dust from a shattered window pane and squinted inside. I made out a room full of furniture covered with white sheets yet one particular substance was uncovered. It was a piano. Was the music coming from there? I thought to myself. But that wasn’t possible as there was no one sitting in front of the piano.

Suddenly the moon came out of the clouds and flooded my eyesight with light. To my immense shock and fear I saw that the piano keys were moving down and up on their own! I wiped my eyes with my hands yet the constant movement of the keys without any solid person playing them, went on. I couldn’t believe my eyes when suddenly the music stopped as the keys stopped playing by themselves. Kat was nudging my leg with her wet nose tip and her frantic manner told me that something was definitely wrong. Without looking back inside I picked up Kat and bolted through the yard and made it outside without anything happening to us. Once safe outside the depths of the house, I looked back. A white apparition waved to me from the front yard and the moon went behind the clouds again.

Ever since, I would never dare to walk home again even if it were the daytime.  Luckily, after a few months or so I moved to Melbourne where I attended University.
